Troubleshooting
Progress Looks Wrong
If a student's XP, streak, or curriculum position looks off, here's how to think about it.
Progress, XP, streaks, and curriculum position are server-owned. The server is the source of truth — what you see in the dashboard and on iPad reflects what the student actually did.
If something looks wrong, walk through this checklist before contacting support.
1. Is the iPad showing stale data?
The iPad caches recent state. If the student just finished a session and the dashboard hasn't caught up yet, give it a minute and refresh the dashboard page.
If the iPad seems out of date, force a refresh by pulling down on a list view, or sign out and back in.
2. Is this the right student?
In a family with multiple profiles, it's easy to look at the wrong child's report. Confirm the name at the top of the report matches the student you're thinking about.
3. Does the streak feel wrong?
Streaks only break on missed goal days. If a student practiced but didn't hit their daily XP goal on a goal day, the streak ends. See Daily goal & streaks for the exact rules.
A common confusion: practicing is not the same as hitting the goal. A student can practice every day and still break their streak if they never hit the daily XP target on goal days.
4. Does the XP feel wrong?
A few non-obvious rules:
- Replay only awards positive delta. If a student replays a lesson and does worse than their best run, they earn no additional XP. If they do better, they earn the difference.
- Warmup is once per day. A student can complete the warmup, but they only earn warmup XP once per calendar day.
- Fixed-completion content is once. Intros and assessments award their full XP only on first completion, not on replay.
See How XP works for the full rules.
5. Does the curriculum position feel wrong?
The next piece of content is determined by the server based on what the student has completed. There is no shuffling, no random order, and no client-side override.
If a student seems to be repeating content, that's typically a review — Scribble interleaves reviews of older material with new lessons. Reviews are by design.
When to contact support
If you've worked through the above and a number still looks wrong, email support@usescribble.com. Include:
- Student name.
- The specific number that looks wrong and what you expected.
- When the student last practiced.
We don't manually edit progress, but we will dig into what actually happened. If there's a real bug, we'll fix the underlying issue.
We never hand-edit progress
Manually rewriting a student's progress would break the trust that the dashboard reflects reality. If you want to start a student over from scratch, that's a different decision — contact support.
