Getting Started
Hardware Checklist
iPad, Apple Pencil, and accessories required to use Scribble. Two supported configurations.
Scribble runs on iPad with Apple Pencil. We support two configurations: the M-series iPad Air (recommended) and the A16 iPad. Both work for the full curriculum.
Configuration A — M-series iPad Air (recommended)
- iPad Air 11-inch, M2 chip or above. The M-series chip makes inking feel instant.
- Apple Pencil Pro. Pairs and charges magnetically on the side of the iPad.
- iPad screen protector (paper-feel). Stays on while using Scribble — it makes letters feel more like pen on paper.
- Apple Pencil grip. Optional comfort accessory.
- Headphone adapter. Some classrooms still use wired headphones.
- Thin iPad cover (optional). Adds a small lift that some children prefer for writing.
Configuration B — A16 iPad
- A16 iPad, 11-inch.
- Apple Pencil (1st generation). Needs a USB-C to Apple Pencil adapter to charge and pair on this iPad.
- iPad screen protector (paper-feel). Stays on while using Scribble.
- Apple Pencil grip. Optional comfort accessory.
- Headphone adapter.
- Thin iPad cover (optional).
What we ship for pilot schools
Pilot programs receive the iPad Air configuration with the screen protector pre-installed, an Apple Pencil Pro, a paper-feel grip, a headphone adapter, and a small case with spare pen tips. Set-up is hands-on once the box arrives.
Spare pen tips
The Apple Pencil Pro case in pilot kits contains two kinds of tips:
- Left-hand side (LHS) tips — the recommended tip for Scribble. These give a ballpoint-pen feel against the screen protector.
- Original Apple Pencil tip — use these as a backup if the LHS tips wear out.
Pen tips wear down faster than people expect, especially with daily practice. If you run out, contact support.
What you don't need
You do not need a keyboard, mouse, external monitor, or any printer or paper. Scribble is a self-contained iPad experience.
