Troubleshooting

iPad Not Recognizing Writing

When the iPad isn't picking up strokes correctly, here's the diagnostic order.

If strokes are skipping, lines are broken, or the Pencil doesn't seem to register pressure, walk through these checks.

1. Pen tip wear

A worn pen tip is the most common cause of broken strokes. The tip flattens with use and stops making clean contact.

Swap to a fresh tip from the Apple Pencil case. We recommend LHS tips; original Apple Pencil tips are a backup. To change, unscrew counter-clockwise and screw in the new one.

2. Screen protector

The paper-feel screen protector is supposed to stay on. It's what makes the Pencil feel like pen on paper. But if it's:

  • Peeling at the edges — strokes may register inconsistently near the edge.
  • Deeply scratched — strokes may break across damaged areas.

Contact support for a replacement. Don't write on the bare glass — it ruins the experience and wears the Pencil tip faster.

3. Grip during writing

The Apple Pencil grip is fine during writing (just not during charging). If the child is gripping the Pencil normally and writing still feels wrong, the grip isn't the cause.

4. Hand resting on the screen

Some children rest their hand heavily on the screen while writing. The iPad usually handles this fine — palm rejection is good — but if strokes are dropping, try having them lift their hand slightly.

5. Restart the iPad

If everything looks physically fine but writing is still off, restart the iPad. Hold power + volume up until the slider appears.

6. Check the Pencil is paired

If the Pencil disconnected without you noticing, the iPad treats the strokes as finger touches and they won't register the same. See Apple Pencil pairing and charging.

7. Pencil battery is dead

A nearly-dead Pencil can also misbehave. Snap the Pencil onto the iPad (Pro) or plug it in (1st gen) and let it charge for 10 minutes. The iPad shows the battery banner when the Pencil is charging properly.

When to contact support

If you've worked through the above and writing is still broken, email support@usescribble.com. Include:

  • iPad model.
  • Pencil model.
  • A short description of what's wrong (skipping strokes? broken lines? no response at all?).
  • A photo of the screen protector if it looks damaged.
