Roles Explained
Owner, admin, and member — what each role can do in Scribble, in plain language.
There are three roles in a Scribble organization: owner, admin, and member. The role determines what someone can do; it does not determine whether they're a student or an adult.
Owner
There is exactly one owner per organization.
- Created when the organization is first set up.
- Has full access to everything: students, members, settings, billing.
- Cannot be removed by an admin. Ownership can be transferred — contact support.
In a family, the owner is the parent who signed up. In a school, the owner is whoever first created the account (often the head teacher or admin).
Admin
Any number of admins can exist per organization.
- Can manage students (add, archive, view reports).
- Can invite other admins.
- Can change organization settings (default daily goal, practice days, etc.).
- Cannot change billing.
In a family, an admin is a second parent or guardian. In a school, admins are typically teachers and program leads.
Member
A member is a non-staff account.
- Members do not get web dashboard access.
- In a school, every student is a member account. Students sign into the iPad with their member account, but never see the dashboard.
- A member account is linked to a student profile through
member.student_id. That linkage is how the iPad knows which student a member is.
There is no 'student' role
Student is not a separate role. A student is a member whose account is linked to a student profile. This keeps role and identity separate — roles describe permissions, not who you are.
Who can sign into what
- Owner → web dashboard + iPad (in a family, can pick any profile).
- Admin → web dashboard + iPad (in a family, can pick any profile).
- Member → iPad only. No dashboard.
Wrong-surface access fails
If a member tries to sign into the web dashboard, sign-in fails with a clear message. If an owner or admin opens the iPad app at a non-Alpha school, the iPad doesn't drop them into student mode — staff use the dashboard, students use the iPad.
